Sustainably Spooky, Haunt Responsibly
How to make this Halloween less scary for the environment.
#UNLITTER Your Halloween
Simple. Powerful. Positive.
On this day of ghosts, ghouls, and goodies, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement—but what if we could celebrate Halloween without the scare of waste lurking behind us?
From eco-friendly treats, to DIY costumes, we’re here to tell you how you can make this Halloween spooky and sustainable.
#UNLITTERYOURCOSTUME
Instead of buying something new that you’ll only use once, here’s some tips on how to save money and cut down on single-use products.
DIY
Halloween is a chance to show off your creative side. Instead of spending money, try and repurpose items you have around the house to make a costume that is one a kind. Can’t think of what you could do? We’ve got you covered.
Thrift & Swap
There are plenty of costumes to be found amongst the racks of your local thrift store. Buying secondhand is an affordable and sustainable way to dress up this year.
#UNLITTERYOURTREATS
If you haven’t already purchased your candy to hand out, consider more sustainable options with non-plastic wrappers or non-candy items like pencils or seed packets. For all of those leftover wrappers, instead of throwing them out, find some ways to repurpose them, like using them for art. Candy wrappers are great for decoupage or collage making!
You can also set up a recycling station in your neighborhood for candy wrappers with organizations like TerraCycle, which offers programs to recycle hard-to-recycle waste.
#UNLITTERYOURCARVING
Instead of adding to food waste by throwing your pumpkin creation in the trash after Halloween, here are some sustainable ways to dispose of those rotting gourds:
Compost.
Give the pumpkins back to nature. If you live near wildlife, pumpkins can be used to feed local animals.
Donate to farmers. Many farmers accept donations to feed their animals.
Turn your jack-o-lantern into a yummy treat!

ABOUT THE #UNLITTER MOVEMENT
#UNLITTER is a nonprofit that empowers individuals to live more consciously and to positively affect their society.
This movement does more than encourage people to pick up litter off the ground. Its main goal is to increase environmental awareness and educate people on how to live sustainably.
